At times, we all act, or fail to act, without thinking of the consequences. Below are three everyday actions that warrant vigilance:

  • Walking through a door without looking back. The person behind you may arrive just in time for the door to slam in their face, Even if that person is a few yards behind, hold the door – notice their response—they usually perk up and, hopefully, offer a “Thank you”!
  • Accepting someone’s business card and putting it in away without looking it. Our business card is part of our identity. Taking a few seconds to read it shows interest in the person and their profession. Commenting on something such as the  tagline, photo,  or colors will help make them feel acknowledged and you memorable, (see blog)
  • Holding a non-urgent phone call during a conversation. Unless you have a situation for which you absolutely need to be available, turn the phone off and tuck it away. Give your companion the gift of your undivided attention. Voice mail makes that possible. If you must leave the phone on, explain the reason to your companion. If the call comes in, excuse yourself find a private place in which to talk,
  • Raising an inside joke or experience that leaves someone on the sidelines. This breaks the conversation flow and leaves a companion who is not “in the know” feeling left out or wondering if they should “get it” but don’t!  Stick to topics that are relevant to everyone.  Save the inside information for a conversation with informed, interested parties.

If we make these simple acts of consideration habits, we can make others feel valued and understood with minimal effort.
