Have you been video conferencing and distracted by participants on the move? Rob lunges at you, as he reaches over his laptop to adjust a light; Emma’s extra-large Starbuck’s cup eclipses her face, as she sips away. Lisa’s hands circle, while she makes her point. You’re trying to tune in to the conversation, but it’s not easy with all the visual commotion.
Movements that blend into the landscape in a conference room become exaggerated on the small screen. If we want participants to feel valued. understood, and heard, we have to make it easy for everyone to pay attention. One way to do that is to limit your movements.
- Sit in the room for few minutes before the meeting begins to check the lighting
- Seat yourself comfortably
- Eat your lunch before the conference
- Keep your hands down
When our bodies are quiet, it’s easier for everyone to stay on track.
